In October, rural and island voices from over 40 countries, including staff and board members from the Scottish Islands Federation, came together in Inverurie for the 6th European Rural Parliament, celebrating community innovation, solidarity and self-help across Europe.
The Scottish Islands Federation hosted a world café-style workshop exploring how island communities overcome challenges “against the odds”. This included exploring the issue of Childcare with a precorded video with the help with the Uist and Barra Childcare Forum.
With material sourced by Emily Durie, member of the forum and SIF’s Childcare working group, the video presents the challenges faced in Uist and Barra as well as some of the work the forum is doing to help tackle the issues.

Thanks to Scottish Rural Action and the other organisers for a brilliant event. The SIF team made some great connections and we’re excited to see how the ideas, connections and shared learning from the European Rural Parliament will influence future rural and island policy — and can’t wait to build on the momentum created in Inverurie.
