The summer is
always a difficult time because so many
people take holidays during the sunny months
and who can blame them? It's a really
interesting time for Social Enterprises as
well – will you be using this summer to head
out to festivals or Highland games to
promote your work? Are you taking on a
student to help you out with a project? Will
we see you at some networking events or
conferences? Do let us know – stay in touch
or send us a postcard!

'Acorns or
Entrepreneurs?'
Networking Lunch in
Shetland
30 July – Shetland
Museum
|
Are
you engaging
with enough
young
people through
your Social
Enterprise
or are you
interested in
finding
new ways to
interest young
people
in your
organisation?
Should we be
nurturing their
ideas or
encouraging them
to think for
themselves?
Do they even
need our help?
More importantly
– do we need
theirs?
Maybe you are
thinking of
starting a
Social
Enterprise with
young people.
Maybe you are a
young person
with a great
Social
Enterprise idea!
This networking
lunch is an
opportunity to
meet like-minded
people, some
with experience
of young people
and Social
Enterprise, some
just starting
out and others
who are working
hard to involve
young people.
The event will
include
discussions on
the funding
available to
young people and
how their ideas
can help us all.

New Premises for Ness Soap |
A
fragrant new shop has
opened its doors in
Strothers Lane,
Inverness, selling soaps
and bath products
handmade on the
premises.
Ness Soap, a social
enterprise founded in
Inverness four years
ago, has made the bold
move from the Corbett
Centre to the centre of
Inverness.
Over the past few years,
the company has grown
and now offers more than
25 adults who face
barriers to work due to
learning difficulties
the opportunity to
develop skills. It is
funded by the Fairer
Scotland Fund, Big
Lottery Fund
Volunteering Scotland
Grant Scheme and HIE
Inner Moray Firth.
David Smith, Chairman,
said: “This
is a hugely exciting
move for Ness Soap and a
great addition to
Inverness’ retail offer.
We are offering a range
of natural products made
by local people using
the best essential oils.
“Our
produce sales have grown
rapidly in recent times
through sales in various
retailers, at the
Eastgate Centre and to
local businesses. For
this reason, we have
outgrown our small
manufacturing facility
in the Corbett Centre.
“We now have a fantastic
shop and a
state-of-the-art
manufacturing facility,
which will allow us to
expand our range and
increase our sales. It
will also allow us to
recruit more trainees to
come and help us make
the products.
“We look forward to
welcoming lots of people
to the new shop where
they can enjoy watching
the products being made.
Buying Ness Soap
products will make a
real difference to the
lives of people living
in Inverness.”
The string of retail
units on Strothers Lane
has been unoccupied for
some time. Stewart Nicol,
Chief Executive of
Inverness Chamber of
Commerce, is very
pleased with the opening
of the new Ness Soap
premises.
He said: “It’s
very exciting that Ness
Soap have opened a unit
in Strothers Lane. They
can continue doing the
great work they do for
the community, which in
turn will create
footfall in an underused
area of the town centre.
“Ness Soap offers
excellent opportunities
for people to learn and
engage as part of a team
and I am sure this new
location is a sign of
some prosperous times
ahead.”
The shop will be open
10am to 5pm Monday to
Saturday. The
manufacturing workshop
will open on Monday 5
July and will operate
9am to 5pm, Monday to
Friday.

Farr High School
'Off our Rockers’ Success |
At
the Young Enterprise
Scotland Scottish
Finals, held at Hampden
Park on Wednesday 16
June, Farr High School,
which had earlier won
best Young Enterprise in
the Highlands, picked up
two prizes – the
runner-up award for Best
Report, and the Scottish
Environmental Protection
Agency (SEPA)
Environmental award.
This is the second year
that a team from
Highland and Moray has
won the national award
for environmental
awareness. Presenting
the award, the SEPA
representative praised
the team for their
commitment to quality,
to reducing waste, and
to the environment,
which he felt was
exceptional.
‘Off our Rockers’ were
competing against
sixteen other teams from
across Scotland, from
Shetland to the Borders,
and impressed everyone
with their rocking
animals. Having
previously submitted
their business report
for judging, the team
were then interviewed by
a panel of judges and
gave a five-minute
presentation to the
judges and to their
peers. They made the
most of every
opportunity to engage
with other students and
with the business guests
who attended the
celebration dinner. The
students were a credit
to themselves and their
school – and great
ambassadors for the
Highlands and Moray.
At the awards dinner,
the University of
Strathclyde presented a
certificate to Amy Rose
of Fortrose Academy for
gaining the highest mark
in Scotland in their
Business School exam
this year. Amy was
praised by the senior
examiner for her
submission, which he
said displayed an
outstanding knowledge
and depth of
understanding.

Social Enterprise Day
Thursday 18 November 2010 |
Taking
place on Thursday 18
November, this day is
all about encouraging
people to use
enterprising ideas for
social and environmental
change. There is more
information
online about
activities which took
place on last year’s
Social Enterprise day.
Suggestions for this
year include organising
a drop-in event to
celebrate existing
Social Enterprises in
local areas and to raise
awareness of the third
sector within
communities or running a
competition encouraging
people to think about
Social Enterprise, such
as the One Water Project
which ran last year on
Social Enterprise Day.
HISEZ has also got space
in the Eastgate Shopping
centre in Inverness on
Social Enterprise Day to
raise awareness of local
Social Enterprises –
would you like to be
there? If so, send us
your ideas about
involving the local
community in Social
Enterprise. Contact
Lindsay on 01463 715533
to discuss how to get
involved or send an
